One Hectic Summer...almost over!

It's hard to believe that summer is over...but doesn't mean I haven't been arting! As most of you already know, I've moved back to Ottawa and joined the Big Jump Productions Crew to work on season 2 of Ugly Americans, currently airing on Comedy Network (in Canada) at 10:30pm!

Its always nerve wracking, the first gig...you always wonder..."what will they make me do?!"...it is quite horrifying. Although the technique is a little funky, it was similiar enough to how the school film was approached..partial symbol animation, majority classically done... and the first scene assigned? A naked, hairy man yelling scary things into the telephone... D:

Anyways, updates are coming up, as soon as I am legally allowed to show stuff :) And once a scanner is purchased...anywhoos, stay tuned, and if you get the chance, you can catch a glimpse of season 1 and 2 here online!

A quick work in progress update!

This is the latest leica screened back in December...

4th Year Film - Leica - December Screening.

Since soon after it was the holidays, no one really works on the holidays despite the best of intentions...So the progress since the screening is minimial. Currently developing a quick colour script, which had been an interesting juggle...

It is strange...I've always envisioned hippo being a grey purple, a classic cartoon hippo colour. The girl, she's gone from pink dress to orange back to pink. Trying to combine that with varying backgrounds has been trying, and often creating disgusting combinations! If you have any suggestions, please do post! Or let me know if it is working! Would rather know before the paint process starts :D

Ridiculously sick. Its not a happy moment. People who say it is awesome to get sick so they can stay home and be lazy obviously don't get sick enough to feel its pain. How frustrating! Although I WAS getting better, I took a nice 180 degree turn on Friday. My fault, but it was soooo worth it! My Cintiq arrived! Had it sent to a friend's place which is a 20 min walk (ish) away. It was warm and cold (yeah..somewhere jumped a lot) and super windy, but I made the trek for it. So I am sick, but got a new toy to play with.

Gave me the chance to finish this piece I started almost a year ago!

One of the last WoW fanarts I'll do in a while (as I have no interest, or the money to play the game). Also a good send off piece...from what I hear, if I rejoin WoW, soul harvesting will be removed from the game...

So here is my piece in dedication to the weird evil soul draining things warlocks did.

I was going through some more stuff, and found some sketches I did in the summer using MS Paint. Wow that program in Windows 7 has come such a long way. Considering my computer is still running Windows XP and Co, I spent a considerable amount of my break time playing in Paint with a Cintiq. Rough Sketches (apologies I seem to have located only fanart...)

Spent the day story boarding and finishing up my leika v.1 for this year's film. So far I'm not really pleased with the results. Will tweek it a bit more then post for help. Sheridan got so many cintiqs in this year, it's great! I'm ordering mine soon, but will try to make do a little while longer.

Also had some fun times going through the server, backing up and cleaning out the stuff from last year. Reminded me that I didn't post the link to our film. Here is some stuff I fished out of the server that hibernated over the summer months...

I finish Coop on Wednesday, which is a sad thought. There is still so much I want to do here! Currently workingon developing the fourth year film which is a nice little bumpy ride. Okay maybe a big bump. Anyways, I'll post more of that later on. Here is some of the work I did at Big jump the last three months!

Design a girl, and rigged her in Flash. This is her rotation.

A Rough animation done in Flash on a Cintiq in the first week of Coop. Quite a scary moment, since it was hard to get used to the fact that I have put hesitation lines down like with a Col-erase!

The Clean up of the sneak. There are so many problems with this but I'll refrain from fixing them. Learnt a lot about how terrible my original rig was from this XD

And finally a walk cycle that can be reused. Some took a few days, some took a few weeks, some as many as 4 retries! But in the end, if its nailed, you only gotta animate it once :)

Life at Big Jump

Big Jump has been amazing, and its sad to think there is only 2 weeks left until I gotta leave. When I first got here, they had just moved into the building maybe 6 days earlier, so they set me down with a gorgeous cintiq and pretty much had me stay put until they wrapped up their comps install and getting the last of the stuff from the Merivale location (for those familiar with Ottawa, they were in the CTV building that caught fire earlier this year)

The location is so interesting! Its situated on the path to the Ottawa International Airport, so every day you can hear these huge planes fly over us! Also located close to T&T supermarket which I visit far too often for my waists to appreciate. But the food is so yummy...(being deprived of Chinese food at school...I love this place!)

Things are relatively quiet, as they are waiting to get into production. Having just finished Ben Bear, everyone is probably pooped. Once in a while some storyboard artists pop in, but mostly just the directors. Its interesting to see the difference work environment in comparison to corporate/government. So I sit here at my lil desk and doodle away, watching as this studio settles in (coffee machines, vending machines, new comps and new tablets/cintiz installed)

Then there was the earthquake in June. I think it was the 23? That was scary! We usually get a lot of rumbles here and there, from passing trucks, garbage trucks and planes overhead. So when the rumble started, I just thought it was that. But it kept going, and everything was shaking, dust coming off the ceiling! Initially thought an airplane crashed or something, but thankfully ..just an earthquake!

Remember what they taught in school kids! When an earthquake hits, duck under the table!

I really do suck as updates but stuff is coming up! Spent most of my summer cooping at Big Jump Production, an Ottawa based studio who just completed S4 of The Secret World of Benjamin Bear, airing this fall! Its been awesome here, so great that they've granted me an extension here into August!

I don't have too much to show, since Flash is still so new to me. Practiced a few storyboards from the Ben Bear scripts, which makes it so much less scary. Also created and rigged a character in flash for animation:

It is surprisingly scary how long it took to rig her up, and even then not all parts could've been used for animation. Good thing though: Clean up is done~!

I have also uploaded a portfolio website to http://www.chanimated.com/

I'm not too happy with the layout at the moment but fixing it isn't a priority. Currently focusing on creating a proper demo reel and media player, or I might just cheat and use Vimeo/Youtube (which do you suggest?)

So much still to update on, and will try to do so over the next few weeks! As for those who are still waiting on Oddysea being uploaded, I'm procrastinating and you can kick me if you wish.

Survived the 3rd year film!

Still in recovery mode from the weird film hours during the last few months. It was quite strange as I needed to work at the studio for the light tables, but need super quietness, which means either getting up before the birds.

Working with everyone was amazing, really got to know a lot of people really well. From work ethics to interest... definetely interesting.

Sadly our film did not turn out as solid as we could've made it. I think a few hours more would've done the trick for uniting the scenes however the screening yesterday went pretty favourable... we hit many of the gags, and the projector helped desaturated the screen (yay! color unification...) I feel horrible for having not been more on top of things so that the last week could've been spent helping others, but overall pretty content. Ashlyn, we've seen your baby through! :D

Currently working on getting a copy online, but for now, I'll post some stills of a splash I made for Qian's scene.

I'll admit straight out, story is not my forte. Think the biggest problem was that as a child, I never developed little character stories for my dolls, or consistently sketch any character that had a story behind them.

Considering that 4th year film should prob focus on strength, I've picked out a viral email that got sent years back as basis for my film....

A young man is shopping at a supermarket, to pick out a few items he will need for the week.

He noticed an old lady following him around, staring.

Eventually getting disturbed by this, and feeling boxed in, he rushes to the checkout line, but she got in front of him.

"Pardon me," she says, "I'm sorry if my staring at you has made you feel uncomfortable. It's just that you look just like my son, who just died recently."

"I'm very sorry," replied the young man, feeling much calmer, "is there anything I can do for you?"

"Yes," she said, "As I'm leaving, can you say 'Good bye, Mother!' ? It would make me feel so much better."

"No problem," answered the young man.

As the old woman was leaving, he called out, "Goodbye, Mother!"

As he stepped up to the checkout counter, he saw that his total was $229.50.

"How’s that possible?” he asked, "I only purchased these few items!"

"Your mother said that you would pay for her," said the clerk.

I don't usually post life drawings due to the fact its not my strongest points. But whenever I look back a few months, I always regret not having anything that shows progress...or just not having anything at all...so these are from Week 5 session, Derek as a Pirate. Started trying painting life drawings which is remarkably stressful, considering watercolours are one of my fave mediums. Guess that comes from trying to do 30 sec in paint...

Anyways, here's a bunch from that class, hopefully better paintings come along, worthy of a Mark Thurman Portfolio :)

It was interesting, visiting Ottawa, and amusing my parents by watching many cartoons from when I was a kid on TV. Guess with them I'm either watching some gruesome CSI or Picard on Star Trek, so coming home and watching Saturday morning cartoons is funny. One that stuck out was Arthur. Never really watched it as a kid, cause I think that was when Sailor Moon first came out, promptly followed by Pokemon....

Anyways, it was interesting to see how the backgrounds were painted. Probably due to the choice of medium but they aren't as refined and precise in some scenes. Some have colour within the lines, and some bleed out... Funny how you don't notice unless you really look...

Guess it's a still worth testing out. Although not sure if its 4th year film useable...we shall see :)

Since a friend of mine is also learning flash, we're totally going to tackle it with that program, and hope it can all be done ontime!

It was strange seeing the parallel since Canada launched various commercials relating to Elder Abuse. Elder abuse is in so many forms, such as traumatic (HER HOUSE IS BEING EATEN BY STRANGERS), or financial loss/abuse (the house is her asset), or...not sure what its called, but younger generations pressure elders to die off so that they can inherit (Kids not only kill her, they STEAL her chest of jewels)...

Sorry but....fanart for wow...my paladin in T6, although I can't really claim her anymore since I quit the game.

Anyways, this started out as being only a sketch and was to remain as such. While at work, I noticed on Pete Emslie's blog a post about using a certain type of photoshop brush to paint and given that I had no scanner during the summer...this was one of the only piece scanned well enough to paint....thus became the summer project. Hope to have something soon that isnt WoW to try it on..>.>

Making of it broken down:

Scanned....very unproportional...with that massive arm...

Started to color it based on the generic model viewer colors...very bright!

The pride and joy of this project was the shoulder pads...massive metal glowing reflective shoulderpads...really fun to do with this new technique...

After getting about this far...well...notice the hips are massive! At least for this race...

so they got resized....shoulder pads look weird too but the understructure works....blar silly...
Also realised her ...boob buttons? were looking weird. Actually, I'm not even sure why they are there! They serve no purpose and look silly on a male model.

Lack of photoshop means attempt to funkisize art in paint shop pro to depict this story...still not used to the radical brush properties...anyways....

Tuesday, came into work and started to type in my password when lo and behold! THERE IS SOMETHING CRAWLING IN THE KEYBOARD!....after a while it was possible to determine that it was a female ear wig... So i go and beg a can of compressed air from my manager and begin to wage war against the earwig. Doesn't help that our garden got this massive infestation this summer (open the front door, see many crawlies or open the garage door and several fall down onto the car..) ...So the air doesnt work based on the lip in the keyboard but enough aggravation caused her to crawl out and drop to the floor.....i made sure the death was quick...:(

Also discovered that the spider i left alive in my office caught 2 more earwigs in its web this weekend...what in the world? was it a parade? oO they've never had issues before so I hope they weren't brough from home...

You dirty rat: Daring rodent shows puzzled leopard exactly who's boss by stealing its lunch

This mouse took a chance with death when it tucked into the lunch of a hungry leopard.

Seemingly unaware of the beast towering over it, the mischievous rodent grabbed at scraps of meat thrown into the African Leopard's enclosure. But instead of pouncing on the the tiny intruder the 12-year-old leopard, called Sheena, appeared to be afraid of the daring mouse and kept her distance. At one stage she tried to nudge the mouse away with her nose, but the determined little chap carried on chewing away until he was full....

Excuse me?

The little rat - thought to be only two to three months old - was spotted scampering into the leopard's enclosure shortly after feeding time at the Santago Rare Leopard Project, in Hertfordshire.

So intent was the plucky rodent on its mission to snatch a tasty snack, that it seemed not to notice that its path was taking it within a whisker's breadth of 12-year-old Sheena.
Clutching a corner of raw meat with its tiny paws, the rat busily tucked in, until it sensed one of those whiskers moving in.

Sheena, bemused by the interloper coming between her and the remains of dinner, padded over on paws big enough to wreak vengeance with a single swipe.

But rather than giving the thief at very least the hearty set down it deserved, she gingerly lowered her nose for an exploratory sniff.
Rattus paused, lifted its dainty pink claws in submission, then - obviously deciding on a nothing-ventured-nothing-gained approach - continued to tuck in.
And after another tentative investigation, Sheena gave the leopard equivalent of a shrug and turned away.

...but even a gentle shove does not deter the little creature from getting his fill...

...so the mouse continued to eat the leopard's lunch and show the leopard who was boss

So i've taken the time, and started to put up a simple plain ol website which is causing plenty of messed up headaches. A beta version is now up on the web, however, i want to bloody well skin it.

Being new in all this, I havent figured out whether IE6 is compatible with javascript. If you wish to check, the link is [here] I didnt realise it wasnt working since firefox was showing everything. Also, I cant seem to get a page that relies on a template to load, prob due to the web host. Must check that out....Anyways, any input is always loved!

I honestly was stumped at what to do with a flour sack and dentures interaction. I cursed my misfortunes and said...damn...denture...what then hell do they do other than give you teeth?! and it didnt help to see that the only other 2 denture movies was a giant one falling on top of the flour sack and a flour sack grabbing them and putting them on.

Anyways, long story cut shot: i made a storyboard, and non of it made it to the final clip lol :D

Well, it is officially scary to know that Mark and I have been together for 2 years as of April 6...the night he asked me out, at the art show, while i was passed out and delusional. So, I had no clue what to get him..thus led to this:

I should be sleeping....yes i should...only slept 6 hours this week, and i blame last night on this animation..:D I'm content...happier than the seaweed.....ugh...baaaaddd choices...

Very tired and very busy, but decided to try a quick study instead. It turned out ok, and it is really fun playing with layers...im going to try a couple of pieces like this

Most Sheridan people saw this already, our first Animation Assignment: Bouncing Ball, Bowling Ball, Balloon and Pendulum :D

These assignments were darn headaches and were very much tree killers :( But they are done, and got a decent grade for em :D

Rubber Ball:

Bowling Ball: I'd like to say I did this at 8 AM in the morning the day it was due because the other one sucked. A LOT.

Balloon: It seems to cut out in the end...oh well :)

Greetings all. I'd like to announce today, that I am a sheep! bahhhhh! Meaning, I have caved and have followed many to this website, to create an art blog, to show the world my very weirdo interpretation of art. Ahem, well then.

I have blogged before, but never to show art. So this is a first. Hopefully my will power will keep this lil page updated often for your critical eyes :D

As I have no pictures yet, I'd like to take the opportunity to show you pictures I have never posted: The process of creating the mural in Colonel By Secondary School's music room :D Looking at it now, I know I could've done such a better job. But considering the time I did this in (due to procrastination) This is a decent piece for 1 weeks time. Enjoy!

It's really hard to show in the pictures: The mural was done on six 4 by 8 feet panels of masonite, layed out on my basement floor. You can kind of see 5 there, and due to that pole, it was impossible to fit 6 panels together.

The Line art was done in chalk pastel, so to erase involved painting everything over :D

You can kind of see the scale of the painting ish..my back hurt a lot, and my feet were always cold :( No heating in basement in the winter. nope.

As you can see, its a big mural. Composition could be better, proportions could be a ton better but all it all, satisfactory :D
